Resources
I’m lucky enough to live in a place that abounds with farm stands, farmers’ markets, fresh-off-the-dock seafood and other wonderful locally grow or harvested foodstuffs. Here are just a few of my own favorites, and some resources for finding others near you.
Farm-to-consumer sales:
- Local Harvest – Find farmers’ markets, CSA or other local growers close to you.
- Oregon Farmers’ Markets
- LocallyGrown.org – my own local markets, in Albany and Corvallis
- Oregon Farm Bureau farm stands directory
- Community Supported Agriculture (CSAs): Boxed produce, straight from the farm
- Portland-Area CSAs
- Denison Farms CSA (Linn-Benton counties)
- Other Oregon CSAs
Other delicious things:
Wood Family Farm – Offering grass-fed, humanely reared beef, pork and lamb and sausages at the Albany and Corvallis farmers’ markets and by appointment at the family farm in Turner, Oregon. Farm shares are also available.
First Fruits Farm – My favorite fruit vendor specializes in peaches, apples, pears, quince, grapes, and plums, at local farmers’ markets and from a stand at their Independence, Oregon farm, too.
South Beach Fish Market, Newport – One of the best fish markets on the central Oregon coast, offering whatever’s fresh and in season, including Dungeness crab, salmon and many varieties of smoked fish.
Pacific Oyster, Bay City – Smoked fish galore (their smoked albacore is to die for), plus fresh oysters, in the shell or shucked on the spot.
Oregon Gourmet Cheeses – Artisan cheese makers right here in my home town
Nichols Garden Nursery, Albany – My favorite source for whole spices and live herb plants; also does a thriving mail-order business.
